Property Description
Whitcairn is an impressive Williamsburg style home built on a high knoll near Flint Hill, Virginia where it enjoys outstanding views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has the authentic historic ambiance of an early American home as well as the comfort, luxury and convenience of a modern country estate.
The main floor includes a spacious living room, formal dining room, kitchen with adjoining casual dining room, a large family room and an office that is a private, studious space. There are numerous porches, terraces, niches and interesting alcoves that make the house a fascinating architectural experience. The second floor has two guest bedrooms and the master suite. The two bedrooms have dormered windows, built in cabinetry and ample closet space.
The grounds around the house are beautifully landscaped with specimen trees, shrubs and flowering perennials. There is a large open lawn to the east of the house and a smaller lawn surrounded by ornamental gardens on the western side. The jewel of the landscape is a boxwood and lavender garden with brick walkways and a white picket fence. This garden is an exact replica of the garden at Christiana Campbells Tavern in Williamsburg. Below the house, there is a delightful pool set amongst a brick terrace and ornamental gardens. It includes a lattice sided pergola for shady sitting and a curved sliding board that will delight the kids.
The property includes 73.5 beautiful acres of rolling pasture hayfields and woodlands. The land is ideal for horses, cattle and other livestock and is located in the Old Dominion Hounds hunt territory—you can even hack to meets. It would also make a fine vineyard. The land is protected by a conservation easement which puts the land into automatic land use status for property tax purposes which is a great benefit.

Architectural Histoty
Built in 1981, Whitcairn was the dream home of Colonel and Mrs. James White and was the architectural masterpiece of Richmond, Virginia architect, Stuart E. Turner. Colonel White and his wife christened the estate Whitcairn which translates to White’s mound of stones. In 2005 the present owners expanded and renovated the home. The roof is cedar shakes, the siding is wood clapboard installed with handmade nails and the foundation is reproduction Old Virginia brick. Inside, the walls are faux finished to look like early plaster, the floors are all reclaimed wide pine plank flooring, the millwork is reproduction period paneling, doors and trim and the hardware and lighting are Williamsburg reproductions. An impressive fireplace surround and beams in the living room are original to a 1720’s house located between Front Royal and Luray. The staircase in the entry foyer was reclaimed from an old home in Eastport, Maryland.
