When Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum’s direct marketing business outgrew their Colonial-era house in Sharon, Mass., they drove around town looking for a new old home. ‘My wife and I ... identified 20 homes we loved. None of them were for sale, so I wrote 20 letters to the owners,’ Mr. Rosenbaum says. As luck would have it, the owner of their first choice was thinking of moving. ‘It was love at first site,’ he recalls. ‘We walked in and said, “This is it. This is our house.”’
